Hiring a skip bin is a convenient way to dispose of waste, whether you’re cleaning up the house at the end of a lease or a major construction project. There are strict rules about what kind of waste can be placed in certain bins, however.
At L&D Brown Skip Bins, we provide skip bins in a range of sizes on the Central Coast to suit different types of waste. Below, we look at how to choose the right skip bin for the waste you’re looking to get rid of.
Types of Waste and Disposal Methods
We offer a range of skip bins designed to handle different types of waste. This is to ensure eco-friendly waste disposal practices to minimise pollution and facilitate recycling where possible.
Mixed Waste Skip Bin
Most household waste can be disposed of in a mixed waste skip bin, including clothes, plastic, metal, cardboard, light timber, carpet, underlay and furniture such as tables, chairs, bed bases and sofas. You can also include appliances like fridges, washing machines and dryers.
To cover additional processing costs at the tip, extra charges apply for mattresses, gas bottles, tyres, artificial grass and sports or playground surfaces. Including these must be arranged ahead of time.
Building Waste Skip Bin
Designed to deal with specific kinds of masonry, our building waste skip bins can be filled with concrete, bricks, pavers, roof tiles, rubble and rocks. No other materials can be put in these bins, even in small quantities. This is because disposal facilities have strict rules and will charge additional fees if other materials are present.
Clean Fill Skip Bin
These skip bins are for naturally occurring rock and soil that has been excavated from the ground and contains at least 98 per cent natural material by weight. This includes materials such as sandstone, shale, clay and soil. No other materials must be placed in these bins.
Green Waste Skip Bin
A green waste skip bin is for organic waste like grass and tree clippings, branches, woodchips, bark and untreated light timber. Tree branches can be a maximum of 300mm in diameter. No soil or grass with roots and soil attached is allowed. Extra charges apply for tree stumps and palm trunks over 300mm in diameter
Asbestos Skip Bin
Asbestos bins can be booked for asbestos waste. The hazardous material must be double wrapped in accordance with government regulation and will be tipped at licensed tipping facilities in accordance with the law. Each transport needs to be registered in advance and booked in for tipping at least 24 hours in advance.
Speak to our friendly staff who will run you through the booking process to ensure your load will be 100% compliant.
What is Not Allowed in Skip Bins
There are a number of items that should never be included in a skip bin, no matter what, due to the hazards they can present. This includes:
- Fibro and fibro asbestos of any kind (unless in an asbestos-only bin and wrapped in accordance with the law)
- Putrescible waste like food, liquids, nappies and pet waste
- Batteries of any kind
- Chemicals
- Resin
- Paint
- Spray cans
- Oil heaters
- Silica dust
- Fire extinguishers
- Medical waste such as needles, syringes, soiled dressings, pharmaceuticals, medical devices or radioactive materials.
E-waste also shouldn’t be placed in skip bins, due to the presence of batteries and other potentially hazardous (and valuable) materials. There are specific places where e-waste can be dropped off including in supermarkets and other big retailers around Australia.
